Bear in mind, the Sahel is a "French Lake", they don't want you in there, they don't like AFRICOM, you're horning in on their territory and courting their proxies, the French would like nothing better than for the Americans to get a bloody nose in the Sahel, they want all that to be under FAR and EUFOR, they'll take American logistical support, but they don't want you up in their business on the ground.

I don't fully get France's actions in Africa. There's definitely an economic component to it that I am ignorant of, because a big part of empires, influence, and hegemony is always about economics, but I think part of it is a pride thing. Either that or its a weird paternalism. We colonized you, we gave you our language, now we will take an interest in your future. France was pissed off during Rwanda and didn't want do gooder anglo-speakers interfering there either. I believe France got Rwanda and Burundi from Germany as a consolation prize after WW1 (not 100% on this) and they viewed it as part of the Franco sphere. Thats one reason why they supported the genocidaires in Kigali and aided and abetted them even after they fled to Congo. I'm not saying the US doesn't do dumb shit abroad all the time, but France talks a lot of shit about our foreign policy, and they get into the same kinds of trouble, but its not reported. There is something tangibly unlikable about France and French culture. Very sanctimonious and hyprocritical bunch of beret wearing Mao fellaters.
