Putin has no qualms about muslims and Islam, if the muslims back him and the Russian state, they can have their sharia law. Do note that Chechnya now is quite Islamic, and Putin hasn't any problem with that at all.

I would say that with a broader definition of "western" Russia surely is part of the West: Russian classical music, literature and art surely aren't asian. And Russians generally don't look Asian. But the thing is that Russia doesn't see it as part of the West, the West is a hostile threat to it. Seldom do the "Westernizers", the zapadniks, in Russia gain control and even then it's an uphill battle for them against the slavophiles.
