But how do you fit a coherent Hero's Journey, and romantic plot into that?GloryofGreece wrote:I'd kill to see a quality Osfront film and something really telling the story of Stalin's 10 day non decisions during the initial invasion. Hell anything showing the utter craziness of the conflict in Poland and the partisan killing on all sides.

Is it perfect? No, what is. But its not romantic except in the sense that the tragedy of it all is romantic/evocative for sure. There is no fluff. But yes there is a Heroes journey in it.

Yes, there female characters in the story. Just like real life. If your going to suggest it was cheapened by a few scenes between them then idk what to tell you. It was no "Pearl Harbor" or even "Brave Heart" in that sense ( and i liked Brave Heart) but you if you came away from Anthropoid thinking it was hollywood recycled garbage then you don't know what the hell your watching. It gave you a good look into Czechoslovakia during Nazi occupation. And it drilled home the almost futility of it all. It was tragic and real.GrumpyCatFace wrote:No pretty maiden in distress? No way. I'll check it out then. I liked Braveheart too, but after seeing 1,000 near-identical movies since then, I've gotten pretty tired of the formula.GloryofGreece wrote:Yes, there female characters in the story. Hollywood has been pretty much dead of any good ideas for a really long time. Not to mention that even their most "unique" movies are the result of making a book or some other media into a film. And at best Hollywood might not screw up the original source material.
On another note:
Also, has anyone seen Passengers? If so didn't you find it a bit mess up?

Russian WWII movies on YouTube. I've seen a few. They aren't bad by any measure unless you can't into subs. I wouldn't treat them as gospel truth though.

I thought it was a redo of Sleeping Beauty and I enjoyed for that fairy tale story. There are ways to formulate a story and there are awful ways to tell a story. The one thing about using the same archetypes and old folktales and myths etc. is that they got it right. So if you can't make masterpieces at least do good pastiches. Basically make it Hellenistic if you cannot make it Hellenic.Penner wrote:Hollywood has been pretty much dead of any good ideas for a really long time. Thank you. Can you suggest a couple more? Ever since listening to Dan's Osfront and listening to the audiobook https://www.audible.com/pd/History/The- ... 093&sr=1-5Nukedog wrote:

I've been enamored in a sick tragic way with the entire part of the Second World War that doesn't get told really in America. Its doubly fucked up realizing that the Soviets were going to "win" the War but the people were still fucked either way at that point and in hindsight etc.

I posted a couple good ones before. I can't figure out how to find them here with search terms. I'll try and find one of the better ones real quick.
Not sure if I've seen this one or how good it is. Maybe the what are you watching now thread is where I've posted one or two.
