Reasons?
Disbanding the Senate, I guess... cause the House of Representatives is such a valuable governing body.
I'd say disband both and have a lottery system just like jury systems. Want to show America is great, then we deal with all stupid and smart alike. Oh, and if you think I'm joking, that's fine... but realistically it will show where the real problems stand in our country.

In the case of a system like that though, we could also have people recalled if a large enough percentage demands it.

For the people, by the people, if you don't want idiots in power, then don't educate them to be that way.
That's not the 12th, unless you mean changing how many senators are from each state... it sounds like you just want to change how they're elected?

Either way, we need some fucking term limits.

"Of the people, by the people, and for the people..." is the Gettysburg address. It's very nice, but not law; just as "Give me your poor, your tired, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," is a poem on the Statue of Liberty--not law, or even American tradition.
We all sit around here telling each other how stupid we are and how stupid Americans in general are; we bitch about corruption and campaign financing bullshit--why not return the Senate to its original position in government--the "smart people" who didn't have to slogan their way into office every two years? There are more and better arguments to be made on either side, but it seems to me that returning the appointment of senators to the state legislatures would be a blow to nation-wide political party funding and that those appointed would have to earn their positions within the states--perhaps as congressmen, or governors, mayors or other outstanding individuals.

Define smart people? Because if we go by that standard, no one is smart enough to be in government, let alone congress.

You have to be twenty-five to be a congressman, thirty to be a senator, and thirty-five to be president--I think those numbers could be adjusted upwards--but the founding fathers definitely had something in mind in choosing those thresholds. I put smart in quotation marks precisely because it is indefinable--how about people who have repeatedly and publicly shown that they have their shit together? You wanted reasons--I gave you a couple; "smart" wasn't one.

Oh come on. It's a typo. I was referring to the correct amendment in my response, fuck off.

Actually, you did, those who have their shit together normally are above average in intelligence in this day and age. Of course, if we go by your standards at all, that kills the Democrat party overall.

Actually, my bigger concern would be the Chicago-level corruption spreading across all 50 states, as Governors traded favors for Senatorial seats.

I'd be thrilled if the DNC or GOP imploded - maybe that's what it takes to get a new party or two going.
