My understanding this has little to do with what the US spends on it's own defense. This is 3.61 % of the total US GDP that get's paid to NATO. The US is No 2 in the world in GDP, so we are footing a larger bill anyway. Our GDP is approx. $ 18.5 Trillion, which would mean $ 667 Billion to NATO
Note: The US is top of the world in GDP per capita, US Citizens put up the Lions Share of money to keep NATO afloat.
Western Nations as a whole are 3-5X as productive as Non-Western nations.
