Nah. That's how they used to do it to steers. Don't know if they still do. Well of course minus the ice pack. Just a rubber band until it falls off.

When they're castrating sheep, they can either put a rubber band around it - which takes weeks of recovery, and a very unhappy animal, or they can go old school.
