Well I can't speak for the first 15 years as I was not born at the time. I started listening to it when I was around 20 so I can only attest to the lasts 32 years of output but it has never dropped off in quality for me. I try to listen every evening and often use the Sunday morning omnibus as an excuse to stay in bed.
I may be biased though.....

M*A*S*H and Cheers are the best exceptions when it comes to TV, but they bailed after 11 years, knowing the potential of falling off the earth was right around the corner, and both shows are the better for having wrapped up when they did, as opposed to keep going and milking it. The Simpsons was on top of it's game for almost a decade, after a slow start in the first season, before you saw a major dip in quality, but even the closest fitting exceptions in the realm of TV kind of prove the rule.

A decade, give or take a few years, that's about as long as the window stays open for episodic entertainment, the longer a show goes past that point, the harder it is to maintain consistency. Common Sense with Dan Carlin is a prime example.
