Yes they did, communism in the French Revolution went pretty damn badly, there was plenty of indication of how bad communism could be. As usual the communists simply played the No True Communist fallacy to handwave away the obvious pitfalls and claim that this time it would be utopia because this time they could follow Marx's lead and that would make it all go great. To them the only reason in failed in France is they didn't have Marx to show them the light. As usual they were wrong again, and Marx being in the mix just made everything worse.

Yes, and even the people who invented communism didn't think it would work in Russia since they were in the wrong historical phase. They had to tweak the theories to fit the patient. They wanted to ret rid of the Romanovs so bad, it didn't matter what replaced them. It wasn't clear either when the revolution began what would win out. The Bolsheviks won because they were the most ruthless and brutal. Probably they had the least to lose as well. Might as well go all in.
