That book on how to apply stoicism is really good.

I'm getting started on Conquest by Hugh Thomas about Cortes and Montezuma. Looks like a pretty awesome book. Cortes is one of my favorite characters in history. He really got those savages whipped into shape!

Lent from the library of the National Defence School a book about Afghanistan called "The Taliban Revival".
What happened in Iraq is quite well explained in various books that I've read, but the 16 year long war in Afghanistan has been something that hasn't been in focus for a long time. And of course one problem is that even the term "Taliban" is a very loose definition, basically referring to nearly all insurgents. Hope it's an interesting read.

From that book on applying stoicism to your life, this quote from Seneca is beautiful:
https://howtobeastoic.wordpress.com/201 ... iii-grief/
Think about how many people who, in vain, cling to grief for a very long time.
Somebody wrote a blog article about that part of the book:Nature requires from us some sorrow, while more than this is the result of vanity. But never will I demand of you that you should not grieve at all. ... Let your tears flow, but let them also cease, let deepest sighs be drawn from your breast, but let them also find an end.

Thanks. I used to post on DCF prior to the blitz but I only had 500 posts so you guys probably don't know me
in this ecosystem where one needs 50,000 posts to be anybody
It's this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Ca ... sks_(book)
Interesting because it not only goes through all of the usual risks one by one, e.g. nuclear war, nanotechnology, bioengineered plagues, asteroid strikes and so on - but also deals with a few of the social, political, and psychological aspects of the end of the world. I feel like I'm learning when I read it which is always good
