Well at the end of the episode Dan at least mentions he's out of touch with the current media reality and political zeitgeist.

To their credit they do have a decent chat about the role of social media versus what we'd typically act like anyway. How its likely in our nature to "troll" and voice our opinions and nastily even , we just didn't have the chance to do it instantly, semi anonymously, never in person, and all the time until now.

They don't talk about why Fascism started, just some cliff note/normie descriptions of it and then mildly compare it with communism and then kind of mention our times now.TheReal_ND wrote: ↑Mon Feb 18, 2019 8:12 pmThe fuck does that have the do with National Socialism? Nick Mason joins Our Interesting Times to discuss the history of U.S. interventionism. We talk about cost and consequences of U.S. involvement in foreign wars and how America's crusade for democracy has bankrupted the country both financially and morally.

<sounds of toking>
DB: Who would you like to see as president from the past come and be president today?
DC: DDE, he had a good record on tamping down the MIC before.
DB: Totally TR for me. He loved trees and totally DGAF.
DC: Lol I forgot, muh clean water.
DB: Muh roads.
DC: Cool, muh roads, bruh. Why do the bolshies get such a bad rap, anyway? The nazis were totally sitting on the side of King whatshisname at the big Convention I think it was called in Paris. Way way over to the right.

I'm just getting around to listening.
Dan Carlin "Well, what happened in the Soviet Union, and China, and Kmher Rouge wasn't really Communism, it just happens to work out that way, but we just haven't gotten it right yet"
These two sound triggered. They are really going out of their way to defend the idea of socialism and distance Nazism from being labeled Left Wing. Bonelli is more even handed, he's actually introducing the idea of individualism vs collectivism.

Liberals, normies, progressives and a lot of just about everyone wants to believe that some how some way Communism came from a place of good and compassion. They cannot accept reality. They haven't read Stephen Kotkin's Stalin volumes. They don't get that Communism was actually enacted in the collectivization of the farms. They don't understand how 5 year plans worked. They don't value history or spend time thoughtfully and diligently reading and researching recorded history. Then there is the problem that sure there were and are some communist that are primarily motivated by compassion and a genuine desire to help the disenfranchised poor. The problem is those maybe true believers/dreamers are ruthlessly murdered after the revolution gets under way and the majority masochistic bitter commissars start getting their clutches on real power. Like Peterson sometime even elegantly and succinctly articulates many people are driven by their hatred of competence itself not just a desire to do good or even distribute actual power. They are mad at hierarchy that isn't even exclusively power oriented but competence itself! They are sadistic and in many ways nihilist. And normies while not themselves communist are naive and wish for compassion and hope something better than capitalism can prevail.C-Mag wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 10:14 amI'm just getting around to listening.

For propaganda and optical reasons its useful to describe Communism as something that has never happened (but could maybe in their eyes) its useful because you can then blatantly demonize the Right Wing/Conservatism by obviously associating it with Nazism or Fascism, b/c those are "right wing" ideologies where as Communism is obviously left wing and so on. This is the game that is played and it will continue to be played as everyone only listens to who and what they want to. Then through a kind of slight of hand pundits/journalists/bloggers get to say see look he's far right he's like a fascist and fascism is bad and you know anyone that calls use communist or leftist or what have you isn't really making an apt analogy or comparison between the two b/c you know communism never has happened and that bad guy Mao or Stalin weren't really communist and Russia really wasn't communist and communism blah blah blah.
