2) King passes decrees that are examined by a Supreme Court for liberty violations.
3) Representiative voting (which is what we have).
4) An algorithm: keep doing A until B occurs then do C.
5) Lottery selection.
6) True, everybody votes, winner-take-all, over-the-Internet, real-time voting democracy.
7) Scheduled: we'll do this for a while then well do the second place finisher, and so on.
8) Theocracy revelations but still examined by a Supreme court for liberty violations.
9) Democracy

We just chose democracy at the beginning because it seemed like it MIGHT work (even though there was historical precedence that it wouldn't). Democracy certainly has its problems but just because it's flawed doesn't mean liberty (liberalism) is flawed.
