Each generation can be identified by the entertainment that defines it. In my generation, Gen-X, there were particular movies, and specific songs that were popular for more than their entertainment value, in fact, they formed the cusp of who we are.
Movies that either mirrored or formed our values featured the American stereotypical hero: loner, stubborn, capable, loyal, taciturn:

The Deer Hunter
Our formative songs were very mature with sophisticated themes:
