Good vs. Bad

Post by Martin Hash » Thu Jan 06, 2011 6:30 am

Of all the misinformation that poses as fact, the contrived difference between “good” and “bad” is the most ruinous because those concepts are subjective. “Good” and “bad” and society’s constructs, not inherited original truths. When a statement of fact contrasts too sharply with someone’s long held preconceptions, they will disregard any further discussion on the topic. Rather than trigger that response, we will ease slowly into the concepts presented here. People like to think that deep inside they are basically good, where “good” is a subjective term all wrapped up in religion, morals, and ethics. In fact, all people are objectively instinctual, no “good” nor “bad” about it. Our instincts come from deep inside the evolutionary psyche, and though we can overcome our base motives with our human intelligence and empathy, in reality we are not able to subsume them all the time, and many people have difficulty controlling their base thoughts at all. Because the word so closely implies the feelings under discussion, let’s call those base thoughts, “sins.”

Because people are the master of their own universe, and how they conduct affairs that are entirely related to them is a matter of personal growth, the traditional sins of lust, covetousness, avarice/greed, gluttony, and anger will rarely affect you, and can be overlooked. It is the sins that compel people to actions that are destructive to others that we are concerned with, like envy, jealously, and resentment. These feelings inspire a host of sociopathic behaviors, such as: perversity, passive aggressiveness, vindictiveness, and character assassination.
