“Civilized” is the word used to describe our goal to rise above your base emotions.
Some people are very successful in subsuming their base emotions, to the point that there is little or no outward manifestation. These people are to be admired and respected but don’t think their internal fight is an easy one – be assured that their first instincts are just like everyone else’s but they immediately overcome those deleterious drives to present more civilized outward responses.
Do not make the mistake, like so many people do, of assuming that mostly civilized people will always be civilized, or worse yet, don’t expect other people to act civilized without lots of evidence that they can be trusted. Dogs bite – that is part of their evolutionary profile. Just because one dog doesn’t seem to bite, or a breed of dogs has a reputation for not biting, you don’t just expose your neck to any dog when it comes along. People are the same way – expect them to respond to their base emotions. If they can overcome the challenge then that’s great for them and you but to rely on dogs not biting is to be bitten.
