Personally, I buy things when they’re personal: autographed books, sushi where I know the chef, paintings by artists I know. I worked for Will Vinton’s game development company for a while, and ended up branding my Animation:Journeyman 3D animation program as “Will Vinton’s Playmation.” Will’s studio used Playmation to make a few animations then, for all the usual reasons, they switched to a more prestigious program. I wasn’t going to continue paying Vinton after that but I still believed in personalization, and I didn’t want another similar fiasco, so I named the next version of the program “Martin Hash’s 3-Dimensional Animation,” (along side a more expensive version called “Animation:Master” in continuation of in the Animation:Apprentice/Animation:Journeyman naming arc.) MH3D was $99! An absolutely earth-shattering price at the time, and it ran on just about anything, including cheap PCs. My strategy was to turn MH3D into a consumer product, so I designed it like what I thought a consumer product should look like: bubble package, comic book-like Getting Started booklet, and a new concept: a videotape User’s Manual that included an indexed timecode. Thrown in was a fold-out quick reference card and a coupon for $100 off Animation:Master (usually $600 – still super-cheap). I admit this was all my idea but not everyone went along. In fact, except for my brother, Marshall, everyone else simply sat back to see what would happen… Sales didn’t go up in an inverse relationship of the price, and since most of our sales were at tradeshows, there was no way to offer a better deal. After 2 years, MH3D was dropped and we just sold A:M ($199 show price!)
