Joining the Military

Liberty is a matter of perspective: if you grew up in a small town with schoolmarms, the Elks Club, godly venues & all the other paraphernalia of explicit authority, there isn't a whole lot of personal liberty. Those folks are all up-in-your-face, passing judgment & telling you how to live your life. As soon as you can, you move to the city where nobody knows your name, you can cross-dress & nobody gives a fuck if you don't pray before meals. Conversely, if you stay in that small town, and the big city slickers vote that you can't hunt bears with dogs, drink alcohol while paddling a canoe, put chickens in cages, or whatever other kind of horseshit self-interested, sanctimonious assholes think is their business, then your thinking your liberty is being trampled. Military enlistment is one way to get out of small towns, see the world, meet new people, and if you're already accustomed to subservience to authority, then it's no skin off your nose. However, if you're from the city, having some jackass know-nothing ordering you around, to the point of jumping out of the foxhole into machine-gun fire, well, fuck them.
