People can be easily brainwashed. Anyone can be convinced an invisible man lives in the sky, or that a changing climate is an existential threat, if it’s said enough times by authority figures with no countervailing message. The base emotions of envy, resentment, exploitation & narcissism keeps people from simply minding their own business, and they use propaganda to control others. There is a difficult conundrum because only propaganda can suppress people from acting on their base emotions. Free speech is a check on both.
