“Lucky” Societies

Post by Martin Hash » Wed Jan 29, 2020 7:42 am

On a personal level, luck is biased against a particular accomplishment because there’s way more possibilities for failure than success. However, on a societal level, there are some percentage of lucky people who actually do accomplish their goals, not necessarily because they have more merit than others but they are definitely luckier. If the lucky are allowed to accumulate their luck, they can land a man on the moon.

“Everything in life is due to luck; if you’re lucky, you know that.” - me

“Luck isn’t fair and you can’t make it fair; you can only buy more lottery tickets.” - me

What makes a society lucky, though?

Venezuela is the most resource-rich nation on Earth. Yet they are eating each other. A society still must be capable of capitalizing on their luck.

I agree. That’s why liberty is such a powerful force.

Rewarding luck results in more people striving to get lucky, punishing luck results in less people striving to get lucky.

Equality of opportunity > Equity of outcome

Incentives matter, who knew?
