You Watch Over Yourself
People insist they feel someone is watching their every action & thought, and there is but it's themselves. Adam Smith called this phenomenon the "observer" and discussed it in depth in his 18th-Century book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments. It also fits into the concept that you are the center of the universe. There need be no other mystical explanation; no god who is personally interested in you, there is only you, and you are watching & judging your own actions.
