Don't buy a vacation home.
Don't buy an expensive car.
Don't buy stocks or bonds.
Don't loan money.

If you live close to a cheap fixer-upper, take a fixed-rate mortgage out on your house & buy it, then rent it out for around $1K/mo to someone with a stable but low-paying job.
If you want to start a low-capital business that caters to cost-conscious customers, take a fixed-rate mortgage out on your house & start it.
Take internet-based classes on how to do something real: electrician, plumber, HVAT, engine repair, etc.
Have a small amount of coinage in the house, and a month's supply of food.
Buy a small generator.
If you ever wanted to go visit far-away lands, do it now, on the cheap.
