Here's how the Islamic mindset goes (I recognize it from being raised a Mormon): Muslims think they are God's chosen people, and non-believers are a lower form deserving of subjugation. There is no liberalism in the classical sense in their religion. Islam, in the majority, has not modernized this stance. And neither have Jews, and neither have Mormons. Thinking Islam will "do the Right Thing," if simply left to their own devices is foolishness combined with lack-of-understanding.

I was raised with this same belief system, but the chosen people were the Catholics. My dad thought that Rabbis with good hearts would likely get in, because god views them as just mistaken. No heaven for anyone else, though.
