Reason for the Civil War?
Why was there an American Civil War? Well, The South thought they had a Right of succession. In fact, it was in some of their agreements when they joined the Union. It was the North, Lincoln in particular because he didn't want the U.S. to fracture under his administration, that went to war to stop them. Lincoln couldn't even get a general to prosecute the war because many in the North were ambivalent towards succession, if not downright sympathetic to it. In fact, Lincoln's first general, McClellan, ran against him for the presidency, after he was dismissed by Lincoln, on the platform of military disengagement from The South. The whole abolition BS mythology was invented by Lincoln in 1862 when the war was going badly for The North, and he needed new firmament to keep The North's support for a continuing invasion. It probably worked, so even though The North didn't go into the war to "free the slaves," that's certainly one of the reasons why they finished it.
