Dead Man’s Toe - June 17, 2023

When you have the opportunity to try something exotic, you should avail yourself to it, even if it involves detached body parts. My wife, Gwynne, and I had heard the rumor that a place in Dawson City, Yukon, was serving sour toe to anyone bold enough to try, and we always make it a point to explore the possibilities. To oil our natural reserve, first we went to Diamond Tooth Gerties, a casino. It had an old-time dance show, including Gertie, a singer in the traditional gambling hall style. The place was packed, no place to sit, but Gwynne asked a couple if there was room at their table and they graciously invited us to sit with them.

From there we headed over to the Downtown Hotel, another hotbed of activity. After paying for the pleasure, we were hosted by an old white-bearded guy wearing a sailor’s cap. He had a pair of metal tongs and a whiskey tumbler containing something that had all the appearance of being a severed human toe, though shriveled and dark black.
“You must touch your lips to the toe but don’t swallow it,” the old sailor commanded.
I’d read the sign: anyone swallowing a toe was libel to a $2500 fine; even in Canadian dollars, that’s a lot of money, but people must pay it pretty regularly because there was a second toe standing in a backup glass, just in case. Gwynne was able to restrain herself, and drank the whiskey with gusto and aplomb, only touching her lips to what I can only guess was the toe of a dead man, without getting fined.
