Amazon Beach, Peru

Our family trip to the jungle of eastern Peru came complete with a famous river which we also explored. People who have been in a small rowboat need only imagine that experience but narrower & longer. Less cavalier tourists than us might have wore life jackets, especially with a 4-year old onboard, but then those types wouldn’t be in the wilds of the Amazon anyway.

The Amazon wants to remind its passengers where they are by having piranhas jump into our boat: the little ones we simply snatched off the wood slats and tossed by into the river but the larger ones, the teethy guys, required a bit more caution lest you grab the wrong end.

Knowing that the river was swarming with piranha, of course we went swimming at a beautiful sandy beach that seemed out of place along the thoroughly overgrown riverbanks.

Heading back to our camp, the most amazing line of clouds, like no other I’d ever seen before, lay ahead, their beauty only eclipsed by a spectacular sunset that initiated a rainfall. It was a race but we got back to shelter just as the big drops started falling in earnest, banging on the tin roof of our lodging.
