Great Basin National Park, NV
Nevada’s only national park is a long way from anywhere, 6 hrs East of Reno along “America’s Loneliest Road;” so isolated that there’s no Internet service. This very remoteness is part of the attraction: I saw a park ranger’s attention monopolized by enthusiastic amateur astronomers exclaiming how black the sky is at night. Turned out we’d arrived in the middle of their convention.
The park itself is approximately 80K acres, and the name is apt: all of central Nevada it seems is a great big basin surrounded by the Sierra Nevadas and the Wasatch Mountain ranges. They are so high at 10,000 feet that Wheeler glacier is there year round. The 25 mile round trip on the road up the mountain is a perfect way to spend a detour while traversing Nevada by car.
