Crater Lake National Park – June 16, 2012

I can vaguely remember going to Crater Lake as a kid, and my wife, Gwynne, had never been there, so as is our family tradition on Father's, which also happened to coincide with our 33rd wedding anniversary, we drove to southern Oregon with our son, Heath, and his dog, Annie, to visit something new. Our other son, Haven, met us there. We stayed in the A-frame units of the Aspen Inn Motel in Fort Klamath, which is nearby.

There was lots of snow on the ground, plowed up over our heads along the side of the road, which was the only way we could take a hike without snowshoes. It was a cold, crisp day, but a beautiful clear sky that reflected off the lake's choppy surface. Crater Lake is famous for the deep blue color and clarity of its water. It fills a caldera, the mouth of an extinct volcano, that formed around 8-thousand years ago. There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake, filled only by rain & snow, which replaces the total amount of water every quarter-millennium. At 1,949 feet deep, the lake is the deepest in the United States, and 3rd deepest in the world.
