Route 66

Route 66.jpg

Everybody says they’ve been on part of Route 66, “Mother Road,” “Main Street of America,” and considering it’s 2,448 miles long, and traverses over two-thirds of the U.S. through 8 States, that seems likely. Older people especially are enamored with the mythology of Route 66 from songs and TV shows while we were growing up; plus, we were all forced to read “Grapes of Wrath” in Jr. High. The route is marked and many small towns owe their continued existence to tourists traveling through. Some of these places only have a few visitors a day, so they’re sincerely anxious to talk; for my wife, Gwynne, that’s good; for me, yikes.

Along Route 66 are dozens of tiny museums, and plenty of places to buy antiques, so it also appeals to inveterate collectors, like me, who want old glasses for our cupboards, old campaign buttons for our pinback displays, and piggy-banks like we used to have as a kid. Of course, there's a Route 66 passport, stops that will give you a stamp in your book & a gift if you visit. For obsessive compulsives, it's a must have, plus you get free pins, postcards, refrigerator magnets, a whole lot of stuff you'd never buy but it sure feels good to get it for free.

Sounds like fun, I'm like your wife, I'd just like to talk to the people, salt o' the earth.

Nah. That's called Art Deco. The U-Drop Inn and Tower Station.

Designed by John Nunn and J. C. Berry. In 1935. That was the style in America in the 1930's.

Nah, I'm done with those boots, I'm shucking the Mounties off and doing my own thing now.

The Mounties are going to confiscate my AR; fuck them.

Canada has crossed my red line. Taxation without representation.

The trick is getting my gun grabbing nanny state Canadian wife to come along.

I'm luring her with nicer weather and proximity to San Francisco.

Canadian winter breaks everybody in the end.

Snowbirds is the natural evolution.

Make enough money so you can get out of this frozen wasteland and live in the Sun Belt.
