Valentine's Day

Post by Martin Hash » Fri Feb 17, 2017 9:57 pm

Valentine's is one of those Get-In-Trouble-Days where a man must be proactive towards his spouse or suffer the passive-aggressive consequences. However, sometimes Doing-The-Right-Thing is made easy by being in the Right-Place-At-The-Right-Time, such as an overnight stop in the "opal capital of the world," Coober Pedy, Australia. And even more easy when you can eat breakfast at "Waffles & Gems" down the dusty street from your underground motel; that way you can have Belgian Waffles with maple syrup & a scoop of vanilla ice cream while your wife is looking at the cheap side of the precious stones display to find a silver-plated kangaroo pendant with a tiny glistening opal.

And occasionally you're so lucky as to have an old opal miner named Rusty sidle up to you at your table and show you photos of his hand-dug opal pit & and his beloved dog, Duke. Rusty had lots of pictures, some with kangaroos, and some with a pair of baby Peregrine Falcons that had been raised in his "cut," which, of course is why his mine is named Peregrine. Rusty wanted his own picture to be taken with his mouth closed so as not to show his missing front teeth.
