Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy is the weirdest place I've ever been, even the name sounds weird. It's in the middle of the Australian outback, among the opal mining fields, upon which it was built, with thousands of tailings mounds, each a testament to one miner's hopes & dreams, mostly unfulfilled if the nature of the vacant & lonely place is any indication. Décor is sincerely camp: somebody actually said, "hey, let's put a big concrete statue of a lizard right here in front of the Opal Bug," (an old VW beetle painted to look like a cute bug.) Highlights also include a dugout, which is a hole dug in the earth, only the door visible, where the Justice of the Peace lived his whole life; a drive-in theater only open on the weekend, that plays movies filmed in Coober Pedy; the spacecraft set left after filming the movie "Pitch Black;" The Big Winch, described to me by our hostel proprietor as "same as seeing The Big Banana or The Big Teapot but it's a winch;" all the motels are underground to avoid the stifling heat but are very humid & claustrophobic; every storefront, no matter what it primarily sells, also sells opals; and there are warning signs prohibiting the feeding of animals on the road.

The Jundland Wastes are not to be traveled lightly. Tell me, Martin, what brought you out that far?Speaker to Animals wrote:

I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan, and I have no idea what that was, unless it was background in Mos Eisley or something.adwinistrator wrote:The Jundland Wastes are not to be traveled lightly. Tell me, Martin, what brought you out that far?Speaker to Animals wrote:

It looks like an A-Wing, but they were only shown on an ice planet. You sure that's not from Episode I?

I asked around; it's actually from "Pitch Black."
