Most Elegant Zoo

Post by Martin Hash » Fri Feb 03, 2017 3:57 pm

It's going to be difficult for any zoo to exceed the elegance of the Bali Zoo. We were enticed in by the fabulous breakfast buffet that included appearances by elephants, a baby porcupine, parrots, an anteater & two baby orangutans, one of which kept hitting me on the head.

Like most places in Bali, we were greeted by flower-filled offerings on the ground in the doorway, and intricate stone carved archways, wood & bamboo construction, and perfect paving stones. You must also step on a disinfectant mat on the way in for “protection.”

The zoo was quiet & serene, surreal even. Notably, the Sun Bears were fighting so violently that the keeper had to separate them, and it was the first time we had seen Javan Langurs, Lion-maned monkeys, which are in the Red List of vulnerability. A 2-year old orangutan was in the infirmary with a fever but he must have been feeling better because he waved. A rain downpour into the water fountains was spectacular, but nobody left the zoo because they were waiting for the “animal encounter,” pictures with a baby Sumatran tiger & crocodile. (The baby tiger kept kicking me in the face.)

Lots of zoos on this tour.. Seriously though, get off the tourist trail, and get some street food. Watch a bizarre donkey show or something, slaughter a boar with a native tribe. Get gonzo, man.

You must have just started reading these.

p.s. I'm writing a book on Zoos Round The World. (It has some doozies.)

I've been following these posts with interest and while I think Grumps is a little unfair suggesting you need to get off the tourist trail I too would like to hear more about the local cuisine.

ps I was wondering about the obsession with zoos.

I didn't mean it to be hostile, just urging you to get out there and explore the Weird.

Funny how all the animals want to kick or punch Marty in the head though.

I like every story to have a theme rather than being a travel log. I try not to write about "normal" travel experiences because everyone else does, plus they seem a bit self-indulgent: it's difficult not to project, "look what I get to do & you don't."
