Regulations

I once watched a TV series by famed economist Milton Friedman called "Free to Choose" that glaringly demonstrated the social blindness of even the most intellectual people. In it, somewhere in SE Asia, Friedman was giving examples of Free Enterprise: a man making pots on the sidewalk of a busy city street while pedestrians maneuvered around the sharp metal & welding debris, and naked men in a hot room, their mouths covered to prevent inhaling the particles from the elephant tusks they were carving. I was astounded by this outlandish Tragedy-of-the-Commons. Lack of Regulations, as practiced in the Developing World, is breathtakingly uncomfortable, unless you have a taste for chaos & insecurity. Vietnam is a prime example: sidewalks are impassable by pedestrians due to the breathtaking range of "Free Enterprise": parking, motorcycle repair shops, food carts, restaurant seating, even coffin-makers fill the supposedly public space. Additionally, livestock feed wherever they roam, and repair & maintenance occur with no thought towards passers-by. I guess that's what they're called "developing."
