Nobody Walks In Hanoi

7 million people live in Hanoi, and probably as many motorcycles. Hanoi is booming, mostly in a good way, and there's lots to see. For example, there's Ho Chi Minh's body lying in state, one of those Communist fetishes, where people wait in line for hours to see a waxy dead guy. You've got to wear long pants in the mausoleum, can't eat & no hands in pockets. But however ghoulish that may sound, the street market trumps it: I'm not phased by bowls of worms, or the butchery of chickens, but the beheading & skinning of live bullfrogs, 20 per minute, made me a bit queasy.

There's also a military museum lauding the bravery of the Vietnamese verses American "saboteurs". One plaque under the picture of a column of NVA soldiers said, "look for American agressors to fight, look for puppet government soldiers annihilaten." There were lots & lots of flags, statues & edifices commemorating Vietnamese victories; hats, shirts & lighters with Communist symbology; and the wreckage of a B-52 in a pond from the time of the war. Not a lot of people were there to see it but as an American, I couldn't look away.

Got to feel for the frogs in the cage, seeing their future right in front of them.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.
