Totalitarian States, such as Iran, Turkmenistan & China, that restrict Internet access, such as Facebook, Google, Netflix & YouTube, from their citizens, because they can, are being both ineffective & counterproductive. Not only can a simple technique, called a , which all young people know how to use a VPN, presumably the same people whose thoughts they are trying to control, easily circumvent the restrictions, but it essential turns them taboo and therefore lends them authority & credibility that even Westerners do not observe. Do the bureaucratic powers really think they are going to prevent a revolution by stopping Google Adwords? Is YouTube really going to corrupt fertile minds? Is Liking your neighbor's Cat Video really a jailable offense? Those in power who make such asinine calculations show their lack of understanding of human nature, unsophisticated as to the real causes of social unrest: certainly watching old episodes of Walking Dead will not make their citizens gay or their women to demand Equal Rights, those things are going to happen regardless.
