Lenin Statues
Americans learn a distorted view of the history of Communism. After traveling through the old Client States, I now acknowledge that for the time & place, communism was a positive force on their societies. For goodness sake's, many of those people were stuck in the Middle Ages, and Mother Russia dragged them into modernity via the Soviet Union.One of the central figures in the history of Communism was Vladimir Lenin, and his statue used to figure prominently in the public commons of all satellite nations, but after the collapse of the U.S.S.R., most Lenin statues we pulled down as unwelcome symbols of the oppression that Stalin wrought. History is written by the winners, and unfortunately Lenin has fared poorly, which is why I look for Lenin statues wherever they still exist. In Armenia, a dismembered Lenin has been relegated to the back room of the Yerevan Museum, in Kyrgyzstan he has been moved to a less public place in Bishkek, but in Turkmenistan his statue still remains in the heart of Ashgabat. His tomb is still wildly popular in Red Square but, alas, he no longer exists in most of his previous homes. A poor historical demise of a great historical figure.
