After traveling through the countries that made up the old Soviet Union, it is clear the U.S.S.R. was a paper tiger. Apparently, Russia almost single-handedly pulled those nations out of the Middle Ages, and the only thing they contributed were soldiers to be ground up in WW2. I was indoctrinated in the U.S. that communism was a total failure but now I have changed my opinion. What those Stan nations have today is because of communism, which works pretty well when a society is being dragged into modernity. Afterwards, of course, some kind of Free Market socialism is better (but not for the U.S. which should leave the socialism out of it), which is why the Soviet system collapsed verses The West, but while it was needed, it did good. Since the Commies have gone, the Stans are slipping back into barbarism. They're picking cotton like it's 1830, and for Kyrgyzstan, cotton is their main agricultural export.
