Like the State insists, I was a child until 21. Alcohol wasn’t the thing that turned me into an adult, it was marriage. It was a long process of maturation, which was perfect. I was naively optimistic until Medicare, which means I didn’t know and didn’t care what others thought of me, allowing a lot more options. I certainly didn’t stay the same, I can barely remember the old me. In retrospect, I can discern distinct epochs of my life that were curiously the same length: 15 years. Since my wife, Gwynne, was around that whole time, experiencing the same things and evolving at the same rate, we can compare notes; she agrees with my 15-year interpretations.
Childhood (my age range: 1-20) 1958-1978
Genesis: marriage, children, entrepreneurship (21-35) 1979-1993
Materialistic: big house, fancy cars, (36-50) 1994-2008
Experiential: travel, attainment (51-65) 2009-2023
Contentment: retirement, grandparents (66-80) 2024-2038
Reflection: introspection, contemplation 2039- (81+)
2024 is the start year of the next 15-year stretch, “Contentment,” and Gwynne & I want it to be just as exciting & eventful as the previous three. Like the times before, we have no idea what we’ll be doing, but we think we have a plan.
