Fastest Cars in the World

I wanted a Studebaker Avanti for lots of reasons but the biggest was that it was the fastest car in the world in 1963. I bought a 1958 Corvette because it’s the only one with chrome spears on the truck. Mine looked cosmetically perfect, however, when I went to Cruise-ins, it was embarrassing to explain why it didn’t have the original engine. Also, I prefer originality myself so I put it up for sale when I found a 1957 that looked almost the same but had the original running gear plus fuel-injection. The very first offer was a C1 Corvette specialist for an investment group that’s buying them up as a hedge against inflation. “I want that car, and I’ll go look at the car you want to buy,” he offered; so he went to Phoenix, AZ to look at the 1957 for me. He called while I was driving but I talked to him anyway: “It’s not something I would buy but if you and the wife are just going to tool around town, it’s got good bones and any money you put into it you’ll get out.” It was exactly what I wanted: original, cheap, white-on-red, and I could do the restoration work myself. The buyer paid me and I paid the other guy then the car carrier showed up at my house to take my ‘58 and the other guy sent me a picture of the ‘57 on a carrier coming this way.

I knew God was watching over me when after a bit of research I found out my new car was the fastest in the world. It had a solid-lifter fuel-injected 283 engine; the first that generated as many horsepower as cubic inches displaced because it had the first mechanical fuel injector, which made it the fastest “muscle” car in the world, doing the quarter-mile in a blazing 6.6 seconds in 1957! Once it dawned on me that I had two of the fastest cars in the world, of course I wanted another one and there’s still a single space in my garage. Coincidentally, there’s only one other “fastest car” I could reasonably buy: the 1949-1954 Jaguar XK120, and 3 makes a collection.

I just got finished restoring everything you see: gauges, carpet, knobs, switches, radio, shifter, steering wheel, etc.
